Nicolas - Forero's Bags and Luggage

I work at Forero's Bags and Luggage, which is a family business started by my mom. We opened in 2010, and we’ve been in Kerrisdale for 14 years now. The Kerrisdale shop was our first location, and since then, we’ve grown a little bit and opened a new location. Everything in our store revolves around bags and any accessories for them.

The business has been in my family for half my life, so it’s been something I’ve been involved in all the time. But before working at the business full time, I went to UBC. I was studying biology, and I wanted to become a neurosurgeon, but that didn’t work out. To become a doctor, it’s really hard and very competitive. You have to be at the top tier, which kind of takes some of the joy out of studying it. I really liked the content I was learning, but I didn’t like all the pressure and competition when it came to exams and stuff like that. I didn’t decide to continue and try again year after year, so then I went more into the family business. It was never really the plan, and at first, I didn’t know what I was going to do. My one plan all along was to study science, and to suddenly have that end made me feel stuck. But I transitioned into working with the family business, and I’m really happy with that choice.

I was born in South America. I lived in Colombia until I was 5 years old, and that's when my family moved here, and I've lived here since then. I visit Colombia once in a while, and even though it’s been a long time since I last visited, I remember that it was always a really good time because I had a lot of family there. All my cousins were in the same area, so every time I went back, it was a huge reunion for me. But growing order, it kinda changes because people spread out. And it’s not really quite the same anymore.
